This is Sakura Chip.

He was born in the grounds surrounding Osaka Castle, among the cherry trees, during a fire bombing of Osaka.

Sticky fuel from incendiary bombs burst and stuck onto wooden buildings with sliding doors and paper screens- While elsewhere, student �volunteers� painted flowers on the sides of their airplanes, drank sake, and prayed that they would be able to keep their eyes open, right up until their death, so that they might fly true.

This is Big Chip.

He is the first Chip that I ever sewed. His fabric is the exact same as the fabric in my suit.

Here�s the story. I had leftover fabric after making my suit. Lots of it. I shrunk the suit pattern a little, and added the head, closed up the feet and hands, et voila! Lifesize Chip Doll!

His zipper opens up to reveal a secret pocket, good for stashing booze, paint, or other secrets in. Whatever is stashed inside of him becomes his heart- Edward Scissorhands style.

He�s pretty sensitive and weepy when it�s old love letters and photos of ex-girlfriends.

He gets pretty randy and rowdy when it�s porn.

I didn�t actually have to sew her, she burst forth from my forehead- Like Athena from Zeus- a physical manifestation of my love for NY.

While I was in NY, I saw somebody wearing a �Go <3 Your Own City!� shirt.

I do, NY guy, trust me, I do!

But I have room in my heart for many cities.

And what is more Torontonian than loving NY?

I found her, then just a Canadian Bandana, left (abandoned? [aBandandoned?] returned?) in a dollar store.

She was already covered in goodbye messages to an ESL student, who must have been staying here in Toronto, and about to leave.

Estelle.

I bought her. Gave her a body. Stuffed her into life.

I can�t imagine how she got there. Did Estelle�s friends write on her in the store, but change their minds right after? Or did they try and return it? Or did Estelle!? And did the storeowner really accept it? Did he not notice the inscriptions, or did he just throw it back on the pile anyway, after refusing a refund?

There are so many of my generation, of my friends, who have taught ESL.

So many Canadians abroad- peddling pronouns, past participles, and proper punctuation. Adventuring. Maybe finding their gilded cage.

So many young people from all over the world, studying syllables while seeing the sights- right here in Toronto, right here in my town.

I really connect with this doll.

She loves France, French food, (Her favourite is Confit de Canard with ~~a Pint~~ 0.568261 Litres of Kronenbourg 1664.) and the French way of life, but she is also a very dedicated traveler. She has become very worldly.

Infact,

She has been to (and eaten the food of) every country in the world, except Liberia, Myanmar and the United States.

It’s been dead so long, it’s forgotten everything: its gender, name, age, birthplace, face, and the faces of everyone who had ever loved him in life.

Of everything it’s lost, that haunts it the most.

"I am Jack's complete lack of surprise"

Jack sometimes cuts out the faces from magazines, and pastes them into a scrapbook.

What kind of friends and lovers did he have? What do they reveal about him? Were they kind or cold? Fun or reserved? Adventurous or timid? Athletic? Intelligent? Beautiful?

But Jack puts on a brave face, wears happy, fun, friendly, flowery and fruity clothing and colours, and tries to go to work everyday. Jack’s never late. He doesn’t really have a job, but he tries to do a little bit of everything. He can’t remember what he did for a living. He’s hoping someday something will jog his memory.

Jack explains: “We spend most of our lives working. You’d think I’d remember a little about whatever I did.”

I think maybe Jack is from the future, and his job isn’t around yet.

Or maybe he worked as a cooper or something.

Bask is an amazing artist who was kind enough to send me a T-Shirt and some stickers in exchange for some of my own stickers and posters way back in.. 01.. 02? I was just an unknown, eager, wet-behind-the-ears artist at the time, very excited to be making a trade with an established artist with a killer style!

I�m going to send him this doll and let him discover its character for himself. I picked fabrics and buttons that I thought reflected Bask's art and style.
