Evil, Inc. Webcomic Review

From the website:
"Evil Inc. is about a corporation run by and for super-villains. Join the CEO (Chief Evil Officer) Evil Atom, a Silver-Age-villain-turned-businessman; Lightning Lady, a recovering supervillainess; Dr. Haynus, a brain-in-a-jar symbiotically joined to a puppy dog; and the rest of the employees who give a new meaning to Òpunching inÓ for the day." You can see the actual review hiding out in plain sight right here.

Promote Your Webcomic

All webcomic artists want to promote their work. That's a given. What we have been lacking is an online place to learn how to promote. How much should you spend on advertising? What else can you do to get a bigger audience? What resources exist for us to take advantage of?

It's new, but there is now such a place. Its' mission is to collect all these resources together so we can all benefit. So, go. Check out how to promote your webcomic and then suggest a resource in the appropriate heading.

Lord of the Trees
Things may have finally just gotten better.

Well, of course, the boys are in full scale retreat and Dark Jay has declared himself Lord of the Trees. None of that is good, per se.

The good part is that DJ is finally done monologing.

Madscott starts out as black and white line drawings but switches over to color in early 2008. A month later it switches back and for a good reason. Even though it looks good, the artist doesn't want to rely on color to carry the comic. The line drawings are not especially detailed but that's not the charm of the strip. I'll come back to that after I talk about some of the details that support it. See the rest of the review right here.

After reading this article by Ben Gordon, I had to fight the urge to entitle this resource "the care and feeding of artists."

But if I had,it would have really cheapened what Mr. Gordon had to say in his article. Let's not get all artsy, angsty and melodramatic - but the artist has some desires that they might not even realize. And those who don't practice art understand even less of what an 'artist' might be going through. Take a look at what an artist needs.

The Tree Fort is Lost!
Sounds like a weepy sad song, doesn't it? Or maybe something out of Monty Python.

OH NO! DJ has claimed the Tree Fort! That was supposed to be the first, last and only line of defense against the encroaching forces of the Natives (and Dark Jay, as it turns out.)

This brings us even with the end of the Frog Pond Experiment, the last storyline. I was experimenting with doing more gag comics but I tend to think more in story form rather than pure gags. I'll be trying something a little more in the middle in the next storyline. We're not quite out of this one yet, though.

Jefbot Webcomic Review
Jefbot is a semi autobiographical webcomic that revolves around an actor named Jeff. The comic is full of actor audtions, video games, tv and movies among other pop culture references. "Oh no!" I can hear you saying that now. Wait! There's more to it than that...

There are also new reviews (the first!) on Comicfencing.com of We The Robots. Check them out too.

Announcements
It's time to make the announcement I've been hinting at for a while. I'm working with some other reviewers to get a master review site going. A bunch of us will all be reviewing the same comic every week, which will give you a great idea of what the week's comic will be like. This site can be found at ComicFencing.com and it will be full of dueling reviews. You'll see our ratings of the comics and you'll be able to rate the reviewers, too.

This week's comic is We The Robots and I want to invite you to stop by and check it out on Friday when I post the reviews. Reviews will also continue here at ArtPatient, so don't worry.

Announcement number two is that I've adjusted the update schedule slightly to better reflect when I'm able to have the updates done. I will try to get the reviews here on ArtPatient posted on Thursdays, but it will usually be Fridays.

This tutorial really gives out some secrets about how to create eye catching compositions of all kinds- not just portraits. There's a number of little tips to give your work that extra pop. I took special note of the lighting tips near the end. It really gives the piece a very strong feel.

Notice: I'm going to try to get a tutorial typed up for tomorrow night, but it's not guaranteed. I've got some reviews to write and (more than likely) no extra free time until Saturday. (This is where you lecture me on having a 'buffer' so updates happen like they're supposed to.)

Jefbot is a semi autobiographical webcomic that revolves around an actor named Jeff. The comic is full of actor audtions, video games, tv and movies among other pop culture references. "Oh no!" I can hear you saying that now. Wait! There's more to it than that...

This tutorial really gives out some secrets about how to create eye catching compositions of all kinds- not just portraits. There's a number of little tips to give your work that extra pop. I took special note of the lighting tips near the end. It really gives the piece a very strong feel.

But don't take my word for it, see this Striking Portraits tutorial (in downloadable pdf format) by Hoang Nguyen.

Sounds like a weepy sad song, doesn't it? Or maybe something out of Monty Python.

Depending on your point of view, Dark Jay could be the villain of this story OR the struggling hero. You get to decide. I like a good villain.

Sheldon Webcomic Review
Sheldon has a great foundational premise. From the website: "In a nutshell, Sheldon is a sarcastic, nerdy family strip filled with pop-culture references and fun, random storylines. At its center is this weird, wonderful little family: a boy, his duck, and the grandfather that raises them both. It's a strip of geeks, for geeks, drawn by a geek. You'll dig it: trust us." There is room in that premise for all kinds of themes and humor, including as family, kid, sci-fi and pop culture gags. There's no one thing that gets ridden into the ground, so it's a wonderful setup. Further, the above quote actually undersells the comic (by far the best way to make me happy that I took the time to follow up on my interest.) You can see the comic and get the rest of the review here...

Stardrop Webcomic Review
Stardrop is the story of a galactic princess named Ashelle who is self-exiled to the Earth. She must find out how to live here among us Earthlings and yet her past continues to chase her. Ashelle cannot escape herself or her responsibilities no matter how hard she tries. That sounds like a pretty weighty story, and it is, but Stardrop is not a standard, run of the mill science fiction action story. It has moments of drama and lightheartedness but it is satisfyingly deep. Get the rest of the review right here.
If you've ever tried to create a comic of any kind, you'll find that the way the panels are laid out have a great effect on the reader's comprehension of your comic. Primarily, if the reader becomes confused by the order the panels are to be read, then they will have a hard time following what happens in the comic. Follow along to see the rest of the article.

Navigating Comics
If you've ever tried to create a comic of any kind, you'll find that the way the panels are laid out have a great effect on the reader's comprehension of your comic. Primarily, if the reader becomes confused by the order the panels are to be read, then they will have a hard time following what happens in the comic. Follow along to see the rest of the article.

Not Again
This would be a funny story if it weren't so disappointingly pathetic. Last Wednesday and Thursday, I did way too much work out in the yard. My lower back is not accustomed to all that "exercise," as they call it, and it was pretty sore for a couple of day. Then... I'll spare you the boring play by play from then until now - All that's important is that nothing ever goes like I plan it will.

Unfortunately, I also have some things to accomplish which will likely take up my free time for the next several days. Looks like I will be posting the update on Friday. Sorry for the long, boring story.
